HOL LiNK
HOL LiNK runs in a similar way to HOL where we take a small number of students each day out of their normal school routine, and form a strong and secure relationship with the HOL LiNK teacher. The underlying philosophy is the same; strong relationships make for good outcomes. It works with the same staff:student ratio and makes use of practical activities to provide opportunities to explore literacy and numeracy in real contexts. For instance, the HOL LiNK team will often be involved in preparing a morning tea for their own and the other HOL group. This provides a genuine context to teach about quantity, measurement, ratios and budgeting.
HOL LiNK students are also involved in planning and executing HOL projects, connecting them to real and practical activities which are used to further exemplify literacy and numeracy concepts. This is very different to the decontextualised abstractions of the classroom.
As mentioned above, the success of the program hinges on the relationships formed with the HOL LiNK teacher who also acts as a literal link between the student and their English and Maths teachers. The students are in the hut for the first half of the day, then return to class after lunch. The HOL LiNK teacher uses this time to communicate with the HOL LiNK student's teachers so that they can fruitfully target the relevant areas of the curriculum in their work with each student, they work with the student welfare team in the school, they visit the students in their classes to offer direct support, and communicate with their parents to keep them informed and discuss any issues. They are a genuine link between the student, their family and their school.
